I am often asked how to choose healthy snacks, how often to snack and ideas for good snacking recipes. I thought I would write a little more on this for anyone interested….

Everyone is different and it does depend on your personal aim, but I would say if you work on 3 healthy balanced meals along with 2 healthy snacks each day then that would be a good guide.
Many people tell me, they want to “lose weight fast” and need the best tips to reduce body fat! It’s really not good to look for quick fixes or start fad diets, all this results in when you lose interest is snacking all day probably on the things you cut out in the first place!
Snacking v Meals
In my opinion, everyone should be fueling their body 5 times per day. When I say this to some people, they are shocked! I’m not talking 5 meals per day. 3 balanced meals spaced out as evenly as possible with 2 light snacks in between. You could even do 2 meals and 3 snacks if you have a smaller appetite. What the light snacks do in between is they keep your metabolism sped up. This in turn helps keep lean muscle mass up and body fat down.
So you want to know how to choose healthy snacks?
Ok so a few simple healthy snacks I use:
- Ryvitas & Cottage cheese
- Greek yoghurt & blueberries
- Almonds & glass milk
- Prawns & cucumber
- Pumpkin seeds & fruit
Your snacks don’t have to be full recipes. If you have a busy lifestyle just keep them simple. Its just something quick to slot in, just a handful to keep you going until next meal.
When you do have more time, maybe at weekends, then you can make your snacks a little more interesting. I would always suggest healthy snacks DIY style! Don’t get pre-made or processed.
Some people get stressed about consuming too many calories especially if they are increasing their eating frequency from 3 to 5 times per day. My number 1 tip on how to lose weight is: eat 5 times per day! If you would like to track or get re-assurance you are not over doing it – I would recommend using Myfitnesspal (android download) / MyFitnesspal (apple download).
