Whatever cardio machine you choose to use….rower, treadmill, cross trainer, stepper, I’m sure you want to know the most effective type of cardio to do in the gym?
What I personally do:
My personal favourite is the stairmaster. You may have seen it before, not every gym has one. Its basically a revolving staircase. I like it as it activates my glutes. You need to have your posture right to do this though. No point hanging on with your arms to the hand rails and letting your upper body take the work off! If you want to work upper too on a cardio machine, use the cross trainer or rower.
So to make sure you are actually using your glutes, stand straight and take long stride steps, squeezing your glute muscle as you push down. Sometimes I will take my step wider too to hit them in a slightly different place.
Anyway, getting back to the most effective type of cardio to do in the gym… do HIIT style!
Its simple!….for the most effective type of cardio to do in the gym:
1.Choose your cardio machine
2. Set it for 10-20 minutes (depending on your fitness level or time available)
3. Start at a steady pace, like a jogging pace for 1 minute
4. Increase speed, to like a running pace for 30 secs (your maximum or 80% of maximum)
5. Then do 1 min steady again, then 30 secs fast and so on.
This is much more effective for fat burning, increasing fitness level faster and time efficient as you can get the same calorie burn if not more in half the time it would take you plodding along at normal pace continuously.
I nearly always do 15 minutes on the stairmaster in this way before my weights session.
As I train in a morning, I am conscious that my body will not be burning fat as well at the end of the day so I try to do 10-15 minutes on my elliptical machine at home – same style – HIIT.
Its always a good idea to have your own cardio machine at home. There may be days where life takes over and you just can’t get away for a full gym workout. Everyone can fit in 10 minutes while dinner is cooking or watching tv!
People think cardio machines are mega expensive! They are not if you know where to shop!
